Its Consistency and hard work day after day that breeds results and success
(well that and the right plan of course!)
A visual guide on why I choose the path to fitness and how I got there!
Interview with Bryan
Yo! My name is Bryan,
I’ve been a personal trainer for 3 years now. I’ve racked up thousands of hours of experience helping people reach their goals.
I’ve experienced many, many, different levels of fitness in my life.
Many online personal trainers give the perception of having always been fit. They played sports in school, then college/university and then brokered that into a life in the gym and on instagram. They look like they can exercise without breaking a sweat (or a nail). Unlike these trainers I came late to fitness. I had to work very very hard to undo years of bad habits. They don’t know what it’s like to shop in the ‘extra large’ section of a clothing store, to ask the assistant if they have any larger sizes out the back. They may not have experienced the perils of living a sedentary lifestyle and the ease at which it’s possible to make a bad food choice, meal after meal, day after day! I have! I have lived that struggle. I know how hard it can be to walk into a gym for the first time overweight and scared, or walk in again and again feeling like you’re wasting your time. However, I also know that when you persevere and you turn-up day after day, amazing things can happen.
Years of sitting behind a desk not taking care of myself properly, I was 26 stone, had given myself Type 2 diabetes through eating so much and so poorly and was chronically unhappy. After a health scare, I did the hardest thing I ever had to do, walk into a local gym and try and save my own life. I had no clue what I was doing. The gym machines I saw people using were confusing, the huge guys with bulging muscles lifting weights with ease were intimidating and the classes were filled with fit, slim people who seemed to instinctively know all the moves.
That walk was the start of a journey that has transformed my life.
It took a long time and a lot of research to find my way, to understand what types of exercises were suitable for my body, my ability and my goals. I rejected a lot of very bad information I routinely found online, obvious bad advice well meant some of the time but still bad nonetheless. After some time I became comfortable enough to ask for help and engage with others. I stuck it out, I persisted and found the techniques and routines I had developed were starting to work.
In time I went from the guy struggling in the corner of the gym to the guy others were asking for advice on how to achieve what I had achieved. I halved my bodyweight, reversed my diabetes and went from waking up with back and knee pain every morning to waking up looking forward to standing, panting at the top of all the stairs I would sprint up that day!
In time I realised I wanted to help others to do what I had done, I knew how hard it was and I knew I could make it easier for others. I knew that most people that have tried to do what I have done did not achieve it; not through lack of effort or drive but by lack of good advice, guidance and support. It made me sad. I know now that most people try it more than once before giving up. That makes me sad too.
That’s why I decided to start BFit, to share the knowledge I worked so hard to gain, to help others achieve what I have achieved. I am now a qualified Personal Trainer and group fitness instructor.
